Win tickets to Doctor Faustus at the Barbican with Murdock London

See Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy and win a gift certificate from award-winning barbers Murdock London

Christopher Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy follows the eponymous scholar who, having exhausted the confines of human knowledge, is frustrated with the futility of religion, law and science. Desperate for a deeper understanding of the universe – and the fame it will bring – he risks everything by conjuring the demon Mephistopheles and asking him to strike a deal with Lucifer: 24 years of absolute knowledge in exchange for his soul.

Maria Aberg’s Royal Shakespeare Company production has opened at London’s Barbican theatre to rave reviews (The Times called it ‘Soul-scouring theatre’) and is booking now for a run of shows up to 1 October. Echoing the fact that we all have a dark side, actors Sandy Grierson and Oliver Ryan share the roles of doctor and demon observing a unique nightly ritual on stage where they race to burn their matches to the quick to decide who will play these iconic roles in a notorious tale of vanity, greed and damnation.

In a world obsessed with celebrities selling their souls for success, and where politicians appear to cash in their morals for votes, more than 500 years after it was first performed Marlowe’s play still resonates through an updated production featuring cabaret and carnival.
