Roomy spaces serving up really great cuisine

The Seafood Sensation

Angler, EC2M

Something fishy about this place! *Riotous canned laughter* *Standing ovation of unprecedented length and intensity* Yes friends, Michelin-starred chef Gary Foulkes has gifted us a seafood-heavy affair, perched daintily on the summit of Moorgate’s South Place Hotel. Lunch is served on the terrace in the afternoons when the weather’s good – it’s best to call ahead – and after 2.30pm the outdoor selection reverts to snacks (we recommend the arancini balls). There’s a pleasantly secluded feel, but the place livens up for its rooftop parties and live DJs.

Summer-ready dish: Cornish red mullet, Umbrian lentils, octopus and smoked marrow butter

Cocktail: Rod Season (gin, lavender juice, blueberry liqueur, green apple)

The Western Wonder

Pomona’s, W2

Notting. Hill. What is it good for? Absolutely everything, if you’re an oligarch or yuppie screenwriter. But this Californian healthy-eating space will definitely appeal to the masses. It’s a sleek, spacious affair with plenty of seating dotted around the gaudy tables and plants. The atmosphere is… hmm. Dare we say the words… “carefully curated chill”? Looks like it!

Dish: Lamb rump, peas, goat curd, mint jus

Cocktail: Pomona’s Party Punch (Somerset Pomona liqueur, homemade apple bitters, kumquat)

The Blowout Pick

Pizza Pilgrims, E14

Maybe stuffing your gullet full of cheesy dough isn’t the dignified summer vibe you were targeting. But who are you kidding? There’s absolutely nothing to match it in the satisfaction stakes, particularly when there’s space enough on the ’za lords’ West India Quay terrace for performatively groaning after your meal without invading others’ personal space. Plus, there’s table football, Mario Kart and other time killers inside if the good weather goes bad.

Dish: Portobello and truffle (white pizza with portobello mushrooms, fior di latte, parmesan, basil and white truffle oil)

Cocktail: Pococello and tonic

The Taste of Italy

Peroni Ambra Terrace, Somerset House, WC2

Sun-scorched seating around the perimeter of leafy, shaded bliss that hosts the Peroni-heavy bar. Bit of everything on the menu: light bites, sharing platters, wood-fired pizzas (read our full review here). And of course, Somerset House itself: the finest monument to aristocratic exuberance since the Made in Chelsea gang left their Franco Manca lamb sausage ’zas untouched at Westfield food court.

Dish: Brittany white pizza (mozzarella, stilton, fresh tomato and fresh English herbs)

Cocktail: Chinotto Negroni (Earl Grey-infused gin, sweet vermouth, campari bitter and sweet Chinotto liqueur)

The Refined Choice

Mondrian Midsummer Terrace, SE1

For many of us growing up, London alfresco dining meant dangling a bit of patio furniture across a metre-wide concrete garden in the Bellingham end of Catford. Now? It’s all riverside views of St Paul’s and the City. That’s what we’ll be burbling to our unfortunate drinking partner on Mondrian Summer Terrace, twinned with the celebrated Sea Containers restaurant.

Dish: Dorset crab on sourdough

Cocktail: Grey Goose Bloody Mary
