The Only Decent Review: Groundhog Day the Musical

Groundhog Day the Musical

Old Vic, to Sep 17. Book tickets

This version is definitely different enough to the film to be worth seeing. Obviously it's a musical, for starters, but where Bill Murray had his trademark put-a-bullet-in-me despondency growling under the surface, Andy Karl is arrogant and haughty. His redemption is more unexpected and drastic – he has more humility to learn. It's darker, funnier and ruder as well. The whole majestic spectacle thrums with confidence: it's from those behind smash-hit Matilda, and you can sense their swagger. Maybe it could have done with more stonking choruses – there's a lot of that jaunty speak-singing – but generally it's great.

Best bit: The ingenious way the stage is transformed to show a car chase heating up.

A special Groundhog Day-inspired cocktail, Waterford Rita, is available exclusively from Mark's Bar at The Old Vic
